During the COVID-19 pandemic, a modular drive-through testing facility was established in Canberra to support ACT Health, enabling safe, efficient, and high-volume patient processing during a critical period.

Drive-Through Healthcare Infrastructure Project Overview
At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, ACT Health required a reliable, high-capacity solution to support community testing. Their Drive-Through Healthcare Infrastructure needed speed, safety, and operational efficiency.
A 20m x 20m x 5.2m modular industrial structure was utilised to create a purpose-built drive-through testing facility. The design supported efficient patient flow while maintaining strict health and safety protocols for both staff and the public.
The facility remained operational for approximately six months, contributing to ongoing pandemic response efforts and ensuring consistent testing capacity for the community.
The Challenge
The project required a facility capable of:
Rapid deployment during a public health emergency
Supporting high-throughput drive-through testing operations
Providing a safe, weather-protected environment
Maintaining performance over an extended period
Traditional construction methods were not suitable due to time constraints, making a modular solution the most practical approach.

The Approach
A modular healthcare structure was configured to support efficient and safe testing operations.
The facility design enabled:
Smooth vehicle movement with clear entry and exit points
Covered work zones for healthcare staff
Reliable operation in varying weather conditions
Temporary infrastructure that could be deployed quickly without long-term site disruption
Key Features
The structure incorporated a range of functional elements to support performance and usability:
Thermo roof system for climate control and weather protection
4 x 5.0m roller doors to facilitate vehicle flow
UPVC hard wall panels (2.4m x 2.4m) for durability and hygiene
4 x windows to provide visibility and natural light
Entrance link structure (6m x 3m) for controlled access
Additional weighted support structures (6m x 3m x 2)
LED high bay lighting for safe, well-lit working conditions
Supporting Emergency Healthcare Response
This project demonstrates the role modular infrastructure can play in disaster & crisis health environments, including:
Pandemic response and surge capacity
Temporary testing and triage facilities
Rapid deployment healthcare solutions
The flexibility of the structure supported high testing volumes while maintaining safety and operational efficiency.

Rapid deployment healthcare solutions
The flexibility of the structure supported high testing volumes while maintaining safety and operational efficiency.
Why Modular Was Effective
Fast deployment within an urgent timeframe
Cost-efficient alternative to permanent construction
Adaptable to changing healthcare requirements
Minimal disruption to surrounding infrastructure
Reliable performance over extended use
Project Outcome
The ACT Health COVID-19 testing facility provided an effective solution during a critical period, delivering:
Safe and efficient testing operations
Protection from environmental conditions
A flexible healthcare environment that met immediate needs
This project highlights how modular structures can deliver fast, compliant, and high-performing healthcare infrastructure when rapid response is required.
